I have asked Preston to write some lines about his Fiat 850 Sport Spider and this restoration experience. This is what he shared with me, and these few precise opinions is what I share with you
“La Fiat 850 Sport Spider è strettamente imparentata con la 850 Coupé, ma prodotta solo con guida a sinistra per Europa e Stati Uniti. È stata progettata e costruita dalla carrozzeria specializzata Fiat, Bertone. Il famoso stilista Giorgetto Giugiaro ha guidato il team di progettazione.
La vettura in foto, nello specifico una seconda serie, è stata importata dall’Italia nel 2020. Sebbene la carrozzeria fosse priva di ruggine e la vernice esterna in buone condizioni, l’interno era stato decisamente trascurato.
Il cruscotto era rotto, i tappeti in gomma danneggiati e, a parte i pannelli delle porte, il resto era in cattive condizioni. Si salvavano solo i telai dei sedili.
Ho chiesto una consulenza presso Elvezio Esposito, dove è possibile reperire facilmente tutte le parti in gomma e dove sono disponibili molti altri articoli, inclusi cavi, guarnizioni e accessori. Una parte significativa del restauro è stata la tappezzeria dei sedili, prodotta da Elvezio, questa rispetta perfettamente le caratteristiche originali.
I consigli di Donatella sono stati inestimabili durante il processo di acquisto, infatti mi ha consigliato solo i migliori prodotti e i più corretti per la mia vettura d’epoca, assicurandosi che venissero inviati gli articoli giusti. È una lunga strada per l’Australia. Si stima che ci siano solo circa venticinque Fiat 850 Sport Spider in tutta l’Australia.”
“The Fiat 850 Sport Spider is closely related to the 850 Coupe, but only produced in LHD for Europe and the U.S. It was designed and built by Fiat’s specialist carrozzeria,
Bertone. Famed stylist Giorgetto Giugiaro led the design team.
This Series 2 car was imported from Italy in 2020. Although the body was free of
rust and the paint was good, sadly the interior had been overlooked.
The dash was cracked, the mats were perished and apart from the door cards,
the upholstery was in poor shape. With the seats, only the frames could be
salvaged.
I looked for help from Elvezio Esposito, where pretty well all the required rubber
and vinyl items are available including many seals, gaskets and pinchwelds. A
significant part of the restoration are the seat covers, which perfectly match the
original specification.
Donatella’s advice was invaluable during the ordering process – making sure only
the correct parts were shipped. It’s a long way to Australia.
It’s estimated there are only about twenty-five 850 Spiders in the country.”
